Professional Duties and Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

  • Understand and apply theories, concepts, and principles underlying professional nursing practices to improve work efficiency and healthcare quality.
  • Utilize in-depth nursing knowledge acquired through rigorous academic training to address complex nursing phenomena, theories, and concepts.
  • Innovate, evaluate, and implement solutions to address diverse healthcare challenges while validating their effectiveness.
  • Analyze and report nursing data, conditions, and challenges while providing informed consultation.
  • Stay updated on advancements in nursing through literature reviews and continuous education.
  • Assess and interpret healthcare data under varying conditions to ensure accurate conclusions.
  • Apply advanced reasoning in nursing, exploring uncharted phenomena based on established knowledge.

Collaboration and Evaluation

  • Partner with physicians and healthcare professionals to create tailored nursing care plans for individuals or groups.
  • Assess the effectiveness of nursing care plans, recommending improvements to enhance patient health and wellbeing.
  • Serve as clinical consultants, providing advice on quality measures, case reviews, policy guidance, and compliance with clinical guidelines.

Technical Healthcare Duties and Responsibilities

Execution of Healthcare Procedures

  • Follow standardized protocols for specialized healthcare practices.
  • Apply foundational nursing knowledge gained from experience and training to perform routine and complex tasks.
  • Conduct patient observations, tests, and data collection to monitor and optimize care.
  • Evaluate procedural outcomes and adapt approaches based on practical experience and reasoning.
  • Remain informed of evolving healthcare methods through training and professional development.

Field and Travel Responsibilities

  • Participate in temporary duty assignments (TDY), requiring up to 50% travel, to provide direct patient care.
  • Serve as a medical escort for detainees, including domestic and international travel under special operations.

Conditions of Work

Work Schedule

  • Work various shifts, including 8-hour, 10-hour, or 12-hour rotations, as well as evenings, weekends, and holidays.

On-Call and Emergency Duties

  • Be available for on-call responsibilities during off-shift hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Respond to emergencies during off-shift hours as required by facility needs.

Remote Work and Incentives

  • Remote work may be authorized case-by-case. Telework is generally not supported.

Physical Demands

  • Walk unaided for up to five minutes and jog up to ¼ mile.
  • Perform CPR or emergency care standing or kneeling.
  • Assist in evacuating individuals, potentially lifting or carrying weights exceeding personal body weight.
  • Alternate between kneeling and standing as needed.
  • Lift, push, or carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Perform tasks in high-stress or austere environments.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum 5 years of professional clinical nursing experience, with 3 years in direct clinical care preferred.
  • Administrative or supervisory experience (1 year).
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license and Basic Life Support (CPR/BLS) certification.

Required Skills

  • Strong leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and MS Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cultural competency training.
  • Correctional healthcare experience.
  • Bilingual capabilities (Spanish preferred but not required).
