Foreign Language Teacher – RUSSIAN (Senior Instructor)

Position Overview

The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) provides an immersive, student-centered environment that promotes dynamic faculty development and innovative teaching practices. Faculty members play a key role in equipping students with essential skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking a foreign language, alongside an understanding of geopolitical, economic, and social issues, through immersion-based instruction.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Employ computer skills to organize teaching materials and data.
  • Deliver instruction using a range of tools, including Smart Boards, the Internet, iPads, and tablet PCs.
  • Design and implement classroom and homework activities that integrate technology.
  • Stay informed about current foreign language teaching theories and methods.
  • Guide students through structured, formal instruction, including class preparation, testing, tutoring, and counseling.

Qualifications:
Basic Requirements:

  • Fluency in both Russian and English, with the ability to read, write, and speak in both languages at a professional level.
  • Minimum education:
    • Master’s degree in any discipline, or
    • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with at least one year of directly related work experience.
  • Experience in formal classroom instruction of a foreign language, including preparation, testing, and tutoring in a structured educational environment.

Language Proficiency:

  • Candidates must pass a language proficiency test as follows:
    • Russian: Minimum Level 3 (speaking)
    • English: Minimum Level 2 (speaking)
  • Testing will be conducted per the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) standards.

  1. Handwritten Essays: Submit a 300-word essay in Russian and its English translation detailing how your education and experience have prepared you for this role. Essays must be handwritten; typed submissions are not accepted.
  2. Professional References: Provide a minimum of three references, including names, titles, email addresses, and/or phone numbers. Letters of recommendation will not be accepted.
  3. Transcripts: Submit academic transcripts for degrees earned, including evaluations of foreign education if applicable.

Additional Information:

  • Employment Conditions:
    • Must pass a suitability and background investigation.
    • Must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application.
    • Position is TERM-limited for up to 36 months, with potential extensions based on mission requirements and funding.
  • Work Authorization:
    • U.S. citizens and non-citizens with valid work authorization may apply.
    • Non-citizens may only be appointed for the duration of their work authorization (less than 36 months).
  • Location:
    • Position is located in Monterey, California, a high-cost but desirable coastal area with a temperate climate and rich cultural history.
  • Salary and Benefits:
    • Includes locality pay or Local Market Supplement.
    • Permanent Change of Station (PCS) allowances may be authorized.
    • Recruitment and relocation incentives may be available.
