Supervisory IT Cybersecurity Specialist (INFOSEC):

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the Computer Incident Response Team (CIRT) activities across the agency, working closely with internal teams (SOC, product teams, business units) and external partners (ESOC, CISA).
  • Supervise analysis of compliance patterns to assess their impact on organizational risk and the effectiveness of the enterprise cybersecurity program.
  • Oversee intrusion detection, vulnerability management, and penetration testing initiatives.
  • Manage staff and resources within the Forensics and Vulnerability Management Branch.

Location and Remote Work Eligibility

This position is eligible for fully remote work anywhere within the 50 United States, District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, with no requirement to report to the office. The duty station is the authorized telework location (typically your home address), and locality pay is adjusted accordingly.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the United States Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) qualifications (including specialized experience and/or educational requirements) for this role. The OPM Qualifications Standards for this role are available in the Information Technology (IT) Management Series 2210 (Alternative A).

Specialized Experience

Specialized experience is defined as knowledge, skills, and abilities that directly relate to the position and is typically acquired through work at a level equivalent to GS-14 in federal service. For this role, specialized experience includes:

  • Reviewing digital forensics data (e.g., log files, registry files, configuration files).
  • Monitoring cyber threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Providing technical supervision to a team of senior engineers and IT professionals.

Required Competencies

All applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the following four competencies, which the hiring agency will assess based on job requirements:

  • Customer Service – Works effectively with clients and customers to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, and resolve issues.

Certification Requirement

The incumbent must obtain one of the following certifications within 120 days of employment: ISC2 Certified Authorization Professional (CAP), ISC2 Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP), ISACA Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), GIAC Information Security Fundamentals (GISF), or GIAC Security Leadership Certification (GSLC).

Experience

Relevant experience includes paid and unpaid work, such as volunteer roles through organizations like the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, or other community or professional groups. Volunteer experience helps build critical competencies and skills and may be credited toward qualifying experience.

Education Requirement

Education may not be substituted for experience at this grade level.

Additional Information

  • Position Classification: This is a Non-Bargaining Unit position.
  • Enhanced Security Requirement: This position has a Special Sensitive designation. The selected candidate must obtain a Top Secret Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance to participate in Top Secret briefings on cyber threats and vulnerabilities with Department of Commerce and Department of Homeland Security officials.
  • Fair Credit Act Memo: Selected candidates may be required to sign a Fair Credit Act Memo, allowing the agency to access consumer credit reports for employment purposes.
  • Background Investigation: Selected candidates must complete a Declaration for Federal Employment (OF-306), which includes fingerprinting and a credit check, to determine Federal employment suitability and authorize a background investigation.

  • Supervisory Probationary Period: A one-year probationary period may be required if selected for a supervisory role.
