Duties (Under Supervision)

As a Teacher in Art (CY-1710-11), your typical work assignments include the following:

  1. Prepare Instructional Plans
    • Develop comprehensive yearly instructional outlines and detailed daily lesson plans. These plans should cover relevant units of study, specify objectives, and outline activities and assessment methods for individual and group instruction. Your planning should align with established curriculum guidelines and support educational goals for diverse student needs.
  2. Deliver Instructional Content
    • Conduct classes by selecting, adapting, and implementing instructional methods and techniques suited to students’ developmental levels and learning styles. This may include a range of teaching strategies, including hands-on activities, project-based learning, demonstrations, and the use of various resources to foster academic growth.
  3. Assess and Monitor Student Progress
    • Use multiple evaluation methods to continuously assess individual and group academic progress, including criterion-referenced assessments, periodic standardized testing, oral evaluations, and other relevant tools. Record and analyze student progress to adjust instructional methods as needed, ensuring alignment with educational objectives.
  4. Cultivate a Positive Learning Environment
    • Establish a classroom atmosphere that promotes student rapport, inter-relationships, self-discipline, and positive self-image. This environment should encourage active participation, respect, and personal growth, fostering a supportive and inclusive community.
  5. Maintain Classroom Management and Discipline
    • Independently manage and maintain classroom discipline, addressing behavior issues in alignment with school policies. Handle minor behavior concerns within the classroom; refer severe or chronic behavior problems to the appropriate administrative authority as needed.
  6. Supervise and Ensure Student Safety
    • Provide direct supervision to students during the academic day and during school activities, ensuring student safety, health, and welfare in compliance with school, Agency, and Area guidelines. When necessary, arrange for additional supervision to maintain a safe environment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Background Investigation
    • The position requires a suitability and fitness determination, including a completed background investigation to assess reliability, trustworthiness, and good conduct.
  • Certification Requirements
    • Applicants must hold or be eligible for certification from a state’s Department of Education. Provisional or conditional certificates may be accepted as issued by the state teacher licensure department. Continuous certification in the relevant subject area is required throughout employment.
  • Driver’s License
    • Applicants must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license to meet the driving requirements of this position, which may involve operating a government-owned or leased vehicle in the performance of duties.

Basic Qualifications and Requirements

  1. Education and Certification Standards
    • Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited educational institution. Certification standards must meet the specific requirements in the state where the position is located, including state-mandated tests or additional requirements. Applicants certified in a different state may be hired under a provisional contract, allowing time to obtain full state certification within two contract terms.
  2. Education Requirements by Pay Level
    • Pay Level 11: Bachelor’s Degree
    • Pay Level 12: Bachelor’s Degree and 15 graduate semester hours
    • Pay Level 13: Bachelor’s Degree and 30 graduate semester hours
    • Pay Level 14: Master’s Degree
    • Pay Level 15: Master’s Degree and 15 graduate semester hours
    • Pay Level 16: Master’s Degree and 30 graduate semester hours
    • Pay Level 17: Doctorate Degree
  3. Evaluation Criteria
    • Applicants will be evaluated based on experience, training, education, and responses on the assessment questionnaire. To qualify, your resume and supporting documents must clearly demonstrate the qualifications required.
  4. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Your qualifications will be assessed based on competencies in classroom instruction, communication skills, classroom management, and standards-based assessment.

  • Multiple Positions
    • This announcement may be used to fill multiple vacancies. Selections must occur within three months of the issuance date of the certificate referral list.
  • Recruitment and Relocation Benefits

  • Telework and Union Information
    • This position is not suitable for telework under any circumstances. The position falls under the bargaining unit of the Federation of Indian Service Employees, American Federation of Teachers, Local 4521.
  • Work Schedule and Probation Period
    • The position is full-time seasonal and may occasionally require overtime. A one-year probationary period, equivalent to two academic semesters, may apply to new hires.
  • Safety and Driving Requirements
    • Incumbents must operate vehicles safely and meet the Bureau of Indian Education’s safe driving standards. Additionally, applicants must provide a safe driving record for the three years preceding GSA Form 3607 submission.
  • Public Trust Position Background Investigation
    • As a public trust position, this role requires an extensive background investigation covering reliability, trustworthiness, and character. A consumer report freeze may delay the investigative process. Applicants should request that any consumer report freezes be temporarily lifted to prevent delays.

    • For current or former federal employees, submit SF-50, DD-3434, or equivalent to validate federal service.
    • For military spouse preference, include PCS orders and marriage certificate.
    • For veterans, provide DD-214, SF-15, VA letter, and/or activation/deactivation orders.
  6. Military Separation Documentation (if applicable)
    • Future retirees must submit a retirement DD Form 214 (Member 4 Copy) or certification document. Active-duty military members selected must be on terminal leave or separated from the armed forces.

Additional Notes

  • Education Requirements
    • Education must be from an institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education credentials require evaluation by a private organization specializing in foreign education assessments.
  • Selective Service Registration
    • Males born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
